Position Title:
Staff Interpreter and Coordinator of Services
Position Summary
The Staff Interpreter and Coordinator of Services provides effective and consistent American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and transliterating services for deaf students, faculty, staff, and visitors. In addition, this position coordinates interpreting and captioning services for the Disability Services Office to ensure compliance with federal and state accessibility requirements. The role requires strong interpreting skills, organizational ability, and collaboration with multiple campus partners to foster an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Interpreting Services
Provide effective ASL–English interpreting in classrooms, meetings, advising sessions, and campus events.
Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials, technical vocabulary, and consumer preferences.
Adapt interpreting approach to meet the communication needs of diverse individuals.
Apply the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct and maintain professional boundaries.
Coordination of Services
Manage scheduling of interpreters, captioners, and other communication access providers.
Maintain service records, track usage, and create detailed reports to assist with budget predictions.
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and outside vendors to resolve access-related concerns.
Communicate proactively with students to ensure accommodations are effective.
Assist with training, onboarding, or mentoring of interpreting staff, student workers, and interns.
Collaboration & Outreach
Serve as a resource on communication access and Deaf culture for the campus community.
Participate in professional development to remain current on best practices, laws, and trends.
Support workshops and initiatives that promote disability inclusion, advocacy, and equity.
Essential Functions

Minimum Qualifications
National Interpreter Certification (NIC, RID, NAD) or equivalent state credential.
Demonstrated fluency in ASL and English.
Experience providing interpreting services in educational or professional settings.
Knowledge of Deaf culture, interpreting ethics, and accessibility laws (ADA/Section 504).
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience coordinating services in higher education or related fields.
Supervisory or leadership experience.
Familiarity with scheduling software and data tracking systems.
Experience mentoring or training interpreters or interns.
Working Conditions
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or occasional on-call shifts.
Ability to manage the physical and mental demands of real-time interpreting.
