How can deaf youth practice and develop their transition skills at home and online?

Deaf youth can build transition skills at home and online by practicing real-world decision-making, self-advocacy, and life planning after high school.

They can start by exploring Deafverse, a choose-your-own-adventure game that helps build self-determination and self-advocacy skills. Taking the Self-Determination Inventory can also help youth understand their strengths and identify areas for growth through a personalized report.

Online transition and career assessments are another way to connect interests to possible careers and learn about the skills needed for future education, training, and employment. Watching #DeafSuccess community stories helps youth learn from deaf professionals about the skills, confidence, and persistence needed to achieve career goals.

At home, youth can practice practical skills such as building a resume, preparing for interviews through mock interviews with family members or online with teachers, classmates, or friends, and developing independent living skills as part of daily routines.

Additional support can come from meeting remotely with the school’s IEP team to explore transition strategies, or connecting with vocational rehabilitation to learn about Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) and other available supports.
