How do you decide which testing accommodations are right for a student?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right accommodations depend on the student’s needs, communication preferences, and the type of exam. Disability services staff, faculty, and the student work together through an interactive process to find supports that reduce barriers while keeping the test fair.

Some common options include:

  • Extra time for processing (extended test time)
  • Communication supports (interpreters or speech-to-text)
  • Accessible testing spaces (quiet rooms, clear sightlines, working equipment)
  • Accessible media and materials (captioned videos)

In some cases, a testing center can also provide specialized supports like separate test administration or adaptive technology.
