Why are captions important for deaf students?

Captions make video content fully accessible by showing spoken words and important sounds—like music or laughter—on the screen. For deaf students, captions provide equal access to information used in classes, trainings, and online content.

Captions can also help with focus, understanding, and memory. Many students—deaf and hearing—benefit from captions, especially when videos include new vocabulary, accents, background noise, or poor audio quality. That’s why many schools are choosing to caption all media by default.
