What is the difference between unemployed and not in the labor force?

People without a job are either considered unemployed or not in the labor force. If a person is actively looking for work, they are counted as unemployed. If they are not working and not seeking employment (such as students, retirees, or caregivers), they are counted as not in the labor force.
