What are some tips for communicating with deaf people?

Every deaf person is different, so communication should be flexible and respectful of individual preferences. Start by asking the deaf person how they prefer to communicate, don't assume. They might use sign language, writing, speech, gestures, or technology like speech-to-text apps. NDC’s tip sheet, Communicating with Deaf Individuals, encourages being patient, using visual aids when helpful, and adapting based on the setting and purpose of the conversation.
